Data center jobs: pay, where they are, and how many are created

Tracker data as of Nov 6, 2026 · federal wage data, state audits and every jobs promise in the Census

Short answer

Data centers create many construction jobs but relatively few permanent ones. Virginia’s legislative auditors report that a typical 250,000-square-foot facility may have about 50 full-time workers, about half of them contractors, while about 1,500 workers are on site at the height of construction[1]. Pay for the core occupations ranges from about $38,000 for security guards to about $99,000 for network and systems administrators (May 2025 federal medians)[3][4].

Data center technician salary and pay by role

Federal wage statistics don’t have a separate category for “data center technician.” The work is split across several occupations, from network support and systems administration to the electricians and HVAC mechanics who keep power and cooling running, so the table below shows national median pay for the occupations data centers commonly hire, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025). Data center technician: the job, the pay and how to get one covers the duties, shifts, certifications and training programs.

Electricians and the trades. The largest hiring on a data center site is electrical: power distribution, switchgear, generators and the substation work that connects a campus to the grid. BLS puts the median wage for electricians at $63,190 a year (May 2025), across 821,000 jobs[7], and says AI and demand for data centers are expected to contribute to rising electricity demand in its outlook for the trade[7]. Most of that work is done by contractors hired by the project’s builder rather than by the data center operator, so openings appear with electrical contractors and unions in the area, not only with the company whose name is on the building.

For where these jobs are, see jobs by state below. BLS says AI and data center demand are expected to contribute to rising electricity demand in its outlook for electricians[7], and that commercial construction including data centers will drive job growth for HVAC mechanics[8]. Within the data processing and hosting industry, BLS estimated a median wage of $49.20 an hour and an annual mean of $116,230 across all occupations in May 2023[9].

How many jobs does a data center create?

Construction is where most of the jobs are. JLARC reports, based on data center representatives, that about 1,500 workers are on site at the height of building a data center, which usually takes 12 to 18 months[1], while a typical 250,000-square-foot facility may then have about 50 full-time workers, roughly half of them contractors[1]. Georgia’s 2022 tax incentive evaluation modeled a hypothetical $800 million data center with 50 employees, versus about 4,200 construction jobs over two years[10].

Statewide totals can still be large. JLARC estimated Virginia’s data centers directly supported over 8,000 full-time jobs in fiscal 2023[11], with employees and contractors earning about $100,000 a year on average[11], and the industry contributing 74,000 jobs to the state economy, mostly from construction[1]. Georgia projected 1,873 permanent full-time data center jobs in 2025[12].

Jobs and tax incentives

Official evaluations have weighed jobs against tax breaks. JLARC found Virginia’s exemption returned 48 cents in state revenue per dollar and added 84 jobs per $1 million spent, compared with 58 for the average Virginia incentive[11], while saving data centers $928 million in fiscal 2023[1]. Georgia’s 2025 evaluation estimated 30% of data center activity in the state was attributable to its incentive[12], with forgone state revenue of $474.2 million in fiscal 2025[13].

Industry figures run higher. A study commissioned by the Data Center Coalition and prepared by PwC says the U.S. industry directly employed 1,005,080 people in 2024 under its own definition, and that each direct job supports more than 4.5 others[14].

Data center jobs by state

Construction hiring follows the projects that are actually being built, and permanent hiring follows the ones that open. The table below shows, by state, the tracked projects now under construction, the permanent jobs their developers or officials have announced, and how many projects publish a construction figure. Hiring is done by each project’s developer, operator and contractors; open a state to see who is building where, or search announced jobs near your ZIP code.

Permanent-job totals add the first published figure for each tracked project in the state, as announced. Construction figures are counted by project and not added, because they mix peak headcount and totals over a multi-year build. Many projects publish no jobs figure, and announced jobs are promises, not guarantees.

Jobs promised by tracked projects

96 projects in the Census have a published jobs figure. Together, their stated permanent jobs add up to 30,008, as announced; promises are not guarantees, and each record notes how the figure was described.

Common questions

How many jobs does a data center create?

Virginia’s JLARC reports that a typical 250,000-square-foot facility may have about 50 full-time workers, about half of them contractors, while about 1,500 workers are on site at the height of construction.

How much do data center technicians make?

BLS doesn’t publish a separate category for data center technicians. For related occupations, May 2025 national medians were $76,220 for computer network support specialists, $63,190 for electricians and $61,010 for HVAC mechanics.

Do data centers hire electricians?

Yes — electrical work is among the largest trades on a data center project, covering power distribution, switchgear, generators and substation connections. BLS reports a median wage of $63,190 a year for electricians (May 2025) and says AI and data center demand are expected to contribute to rising electricity demand in its outlook for the trade. Most site electrical work is contracted, so hiring runs through electrical contractors working for the builder.

Where are data center jobs near me?

Jobs come from projects being built or operated nearby. The Census lists tracked projects by state, with announced permanent and construction jobs and which ones are under construction; its ZIP code lookup shows projects near you. Hiring is done by each project’s developer, operator and contractors.

Do data centers create permanent jobs?

Yes, but relatively few per facility compared with construction. Georgia’s 2022 evaluation modeled a $800 million data center with 50 employees versus about 4,200 construction jobs.
