Where are the Stargate data centers?
The Stargate data centers are 7 U.S. sites that OpenAI and its partners officially call part of Stargate: from Abilene, Texas, to Saline Township, Michigan. OpenAI says Stargate intends to invest $500 billion and reach 10 GW of U.S. capacity; its latest total is dated Jan 20, 2026.
What is Stargate?
Stargate is the name OpenAI and its partners use for a program to build AI data center capacity for OpenAI. The January 2025 announcement named SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle and MGX as initial equity funders, with SoftBank responsible for finance and OpenAI for operations. It named Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle and OpenAI as key initial technology partners. In July 2025, OpenAI described Stargate as its overarching AI infrastructure platform, including partnerships with Oracle, SoftBank and CoreWeave. | Port Washington, Wisconsin | Oracle and Vantage Data Centers | under construction | 1,300 MW (Initial capacity cited by local reporting, in the Census record) | OpenAI first called this a Midwest site, then named Wisconsin. It said Oracle and Vantage are working with WEC Energy Group on new generation, including solar and battery storage. OpenAI's pages name the state, not the town; the Census record places the site in Port Washington. OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank expand Stargate with five new AI data center sites, Sep 23, 2025; Stargate Community, Jan 20, 2026 |
| Saline Township, Michigan | Oracle; developed by Related Digital with Walbridge | under construction | 1,383 MW (Contracted load under DTE contracts, in the Census record) | Described as more than one gigawatt, served by DTE Energy, with closed-loop cooling. Construction was expected to begin in early 2026, and OpenAI reported a groundbreaking on Jun 1, 2026 for a 1 GW campus it calls The Barn. Statements are OpenAI’s, dated by the page cited. Status and the power figure come from each site’s Census record, which cites its own sources and may use a different basis than OpenAI’s totals. OpenAI also lists Stargate projects outside the United States; this page covers U.S. sites only.
How much power will Stargate use?
OpenAI gives company-wide totals rather than a table by site. These are its statements, in order, and the Census does not add them up:
- Jan 20, 2026: OpenAI said it was "already well beyond halfway" to its goal of 10 GW of U.S. AI infrastructure by 2029. Stargate Community, Jan 20, 2026
- Oct 30, 2025: OpenAI said that with Michigan and six earlier U.S. sites, Stargate reaches over 8 GW planned and more than $450 billion over the next three years, toward the $500 billion, 10 GW commitment. Expanding Stargate to Michigan, Oct 30, 2025
- Sep 23, 2025: OpenAI said the five new sites bring planned capacity to nearly 7 GW and over $400 billion of investment over the next three years. It said the Oracle partnership "exceeds $300 billion" over five years between the two companies. OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank expand Stargate with five new AI data center sites, Sep 23, 2025
- Jul 22, 2025: OpenAI said the Oracle partnership adds 4.5 GW of U.S. capacity under development; with Abilene, it said this brings over 5 GW under development, running over 2 million chips. Stargate advances with partnership with Oracle, Jul 22, 2025
Gigawatts (GW) of planned capacity are not the same as power drawn, and OpenAI’s total mixes sites at different stages. See each site’s record for the utility and permit details.
