Which state has the most data centers?
By capacity already running, Virginia stands out: Northern Virginia is the world’s biggest data center market, holding 13 percent of the operational capacity reported worldwide, according to Virginia’s legislative auditors (JLARC, 2024). Among the major projects the Census tracks, Texas has the most, with 19, and Texas has the most planned capacity, 41.72 GW.

The most tracked projects under construction are in Texas (8), Pennsylvania (5), Ohio (4). In all, 48 tracked projects are under construction in 24 states.

The Census tracks major data center projects in 36 states as of Nov 6, 2026. States without a tracked project may still have smaller colocation or enterprise data centers; the Census covers major sourced projects, not every facility.
