Who is building
Data center companies, ranked
Developers and publicly reported tenants behind the 186 projects in the Census, ranked by the planned capacity they are named on. Fermi America leads with 17 GW.
Who owns data centers?
Among the 186 projects the Census tracks, 53 name Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Meta or Oracle as the developer or the end user. The rest are led by other developers; the largest by number of tracked projects are QTS Data Centers, Cloverleaf Infrastructure and Compass Datacenters. The table below lists every company named on a tracked project.

Projects: those with a published capacity, out of the company’s tracked projects that are proposed, approved, under construction or operating. Capacity is the published planned capacity of tracked projects that are proposed, approved, under construction or operating, credited to each company a project’s sources name as developer or operator, on the date of the project’s first recorded milestone. Joint projects count in full for each partner. This ranks what companies are named on in the Census, not the size of their existing fleets; a company’s leased or undisclosed sites are not included.
Every company in the Census
This table counts every tracked project a company is linked to, as developer or publicly confirmed tenant, whatever its status. Capacity totals add each project’s planned capacity where published. Tenants are listed only when publicly confirmed by a cited source. How do data centers make money? explains the business models behind these companies.
Data center companies: common questions
Which company has the most planned data center capacity?
Among the projects the Census tracks, Fermi America is credited with the most published planned capacity: 17 GW across 1 project that publishes a figure. Next are SoftBank (11.2 GW) and SB Energy (11.2 GW). The ranking counts projects that are proposed, approved, under construction or operating where a cited source names the company as developer or operator.
What are the largest data center companies in the U.S.?
It depends on the measure. The Census does not measure how much capacity a company already runs; it ranks companies by the planned capacity of the major projects they are named on. By that measure the leaders are Fermi America (17 GW), SoftBank (11.2 GW), SB Energy (11.2 GW), Meta (10.42 GW) and O'Leary Digital (9 GW). By number of tracked projects in the pipeline, the leaders are Amazon (AWS) with 14, Google with 10 and Meta with 8.
Which companies are building the most data centers?
By count of tracked projects that are proposed, approved, under construction or operating, the companies named as developer or operator most often are Amazon (AWS) with 14, Google with 10, Meta with 8, QTS Data Centers with 7 and Microsoft with 5. Not every project publishes a capacity, so the count and the capacity ranking differ.
